For March - April 2026,
here are weekly classes & studio use options
If you’d like to try the wheel for the first time, or, if you have a little experience & would like to explore new projects, this is a great class. We’ll meet Tuesday mornings, 10am - 12pm, for 8 weeks.
We’ll survey the basics - preparing your clay, centering, throwing, trimming, glazing. We’ll make handles & lids, look at example pieces, and learn a little about the creative process along the way.
The creative process is different for everyone. Our sessions are easygoing, conversational, informative, and give you lots of time to just work on your own. Demonstration, discussion, and attention to the fundamentals of technique & design.
The studio supplies stoneware clay & we fire to cone 10 in reduction. Your class registration also provides access to our worktime calendar to plan your independent sessions in the studio (independent sessions are $15 plus tax for 3 hours).
Note: by placing your order for this class, you're consenting to our Participation Guidelines & Liability Release form. Please take a moment to review this form before signing up. Thank you!

Our popular handbuilding introduction class continues in the March - April session, and we’re delighted to have Madeline, a Green River production staff member, returning to teach. We’ll survey basics — making pinchpots, coil-building, and constructing forms from flat ‘slabs’.
The class is a great way to start working with clay and get to know our small studio. And, if you do have experience, the class is a great way to design & pursue your own projects with guidance from a teacher & from your fellow students. The class allows lots of room for experimentation & developing your own vision.
We’ll also cover clay preparation, surface design with slips & stains, glaze application, and fundamentals of firing your pieces in a pottery kiln. We’ll be working with ‘mid-range’ cone 6 clay. Class sessions are methodical, easygoing, conversational, with a goal of gaining experience & independence in the clay studio.
Your class registration includes clay, firing, and access to our worktime calendar to plan your independent sessions in the studio (independent sessions are $15 plus tax for 3 hours).
Note: by placing your order for this class, you're consenting to our Participation Guidelines & Liability Release form. Please take a moment to review this form as you sign up. Thank you!

Also a great class if you have some experience & would like a weekly studio session to help guide your projects & to learn helpful tips. Each class meeting includes demonstration, discussion, worktime.

Gain access to our well-loved ‘A3’ studio to handbuild, wheel-throw, & glaze on your own.
Your registration includes two months of unlimited signups on our worktime calendar, cone 6 firing, two private shelves to store your in-process work, and use of six studio-supplied cone 6 glazes. The worktime calendar charges a $15 fee for a three-hour work session. Note that cone 10 clay & firing will not be available - to get in on that, you’ll want to sign up in a weekly class.
We’ll have clay on hand for purchase - or, feel free to bring any mid-range clay you’d like. The studio no longer processes reclaim so, you can discard your scrap or we can help you develop a method for doing your own reclaim if you’d like.
You’re also free to bring any cone 6 underglaze or glaze for your personal use.
Your studio access can be renewed indefinitely though it cannot be paused or kept as a credit. If you sign up mid-month your access will begin on the first of the following month, and you’ll receive a separate bill for the prorated portion of your current month if you’d like to start right away. For example, if you register on December 15, your access will be good January - February. You’ll pay an additional $56.25 plus tax for the second half of December’s access.
Note: by placing your order for studio access, you're consenting to our Participation Guidelines & Liability Release form. Please take a moment to review this form before signing up. Thank you!
Green River Pottery’s first pottery class, held pretty much every Tuesday starting in 2018, now an ongoing ‘rolling registration’ session. Once you join, you have the option to continue, renewing every eight weeks.
The class is great if you are making your first-ever pots in the studio, and great if you have experience with the wheel - either way. The two-hour session is individualized, conversational, and with many levels of experience within the group, we learn from each other. Developing your independence & personal touch, getting good at trying new & unusual projects, making connections between clay & culture, are goals of the class.
Over 8 weeks you’ll have a chance to explore clay preparation, centering & throwing on the wheel, trimming, glaze application, as well as issues of design & function. We’re all working toward creating more beautiful, lively, & necessary pots.
As you join, plan to continue for 8 consecutive weeks. We do not offer makeups & it is not possible to extend your registration, though it can be renewed when your 8 weeks are up.
Note that there is a waitlist to join this class. Feel free to contact me for updates on when a spot may open - probably best to do this before purchase of a registration.

Here are the cone 6 (mid-range) clays we currently have available for purchase at the studio:
Anasazi cone 6 from New Mexico Clay. Red-brown & some coarse texture
Columbine cone 6 from New Mexico Clay. White & smooth
Chocolate cone 6 from New Mexico Clay. Brown-black, very smooth
Try googling these clays to get more detailed info about them. We sell in 25lb increments. Click below to purchase any of these, then use the form that pops up to let us know which one you’d like. We’ll put your clay on your shelf, or have it available for pickup at the gallery.
While we keep our rates & fees to a minimum, participation in a class is a reach for some studio members who are nevertheless dedicated to their work & their studio practice.
In the past year or two, the cost of keeping our studio going has increased due to rising utility costs, shipping, rent, and sharply rising materials costs.
Our scholarship fund helps people gain access to our studio to take a class or work independently. A central belief we have here at Green River Pottery is that our pursuit of beauty in clay is encouraged if our studio includes people with a wide range of ages, backgrounds, artistic goals, and diversities of all sorts.
Your donation helps keep our studio accessible & contributes to our goal of creating a workspace that is welcoming, feasible, & inspiring to a wide range of people equally interested clay & in learning about clay.
A popular option for ‘graduates’ of weekly classes here at the studio. If you have workspace at home we are here to help by providing bisque firing, access to our glazes, & glaze firing.
Begin by deciding if you’d prefer using our cone 10 clay (high-fire) or one of our cone 6 clays (mid-range). Clay costs $28 per 25 lbs.
Home studio support provides bisque firing for about 10 pieces, or for one or two 10” pieces. We’ll also email you an access code for two signups on our worktime calendar to do your glazing.
No need to renew your plan monthly - fine to take a longer time to create your 10 pieces. After three months though, of not dropping off work, or of leaving work at the studio unclaimed, your Home Studio Support will expire.
Let us know when you’re planning to drop off greenware! And, make sure your work is signed & that you have an inventory of it captured as a pic on your phone.
The firing fee covers eight or ten moderate-sized pieces, or one piece of ten or more inches in any dimension.
Pieces that are approaching 20” may be too big for our kilns.
If you’ve arranged with the studio to fire work made elsewhere, or if you’re a regular studio user arranging to fire a bigger than usual quantity of work, this firing fee may apply.
If you’re an experienced potter here in Santa Fe for a short time & would like access to our studio, this is the option for you — as long as we have space in the studio for your registration. Click here to email the studio before purchase!
Your registration includes a private storage shelf, firing, and access our worktime calendar to plan your independent sessions through the week & weekend (the worktime calendar does charge $15 per three-hour session).
We have room for wheel & handbuilding. We’ll have clay on hand for purchase & you’re also free to bring any cone 6 (midrange) claybody of your own if you prefer.
Access is limited in our small studio so again, to emphasize, please email the studio with your questions & to make a plan for your studio time!
