For our second summer geo-ceramics field trip, Elena Miranda & Josh Schwartz, our resident geologists here at the studio for June & July, lead us to the Harding Mine near Dixon, NM. We’ll learn a bit about the history of the mine, discover in nature some of the materials we use all the time in glazes such as spodumene & pegmatite, and gain insight to the science at work in the clay studio.
This year we are delighted to include a stop at a winery near Embudo. How does soil chemistry guide the winemaker’s art, why do grapes grow where they do, and what ‘geology’ can you taste in some of the estate wines from this picturesque place, with its long tradition of winemaking?
As before, we’ll meet at 5pm on the Friday before our expedition for refreshments & a slide talk previewing the upcoming trip. As we learn about the shaping, melting, & cooling processes of the earth, as they relate to Northern New Mexico, we’ll gain insight into our own scaled-down versions of these same processes in the clay studio.
This year we’ll ride together in vans, rather than carpooling. Your registration fee will be contributed to the Earth & Fire Foundation. Creativity begins with understanding, and the foundation’s mission is to bridge geology and the ceramic arts.
Dates:
Friday July 17, 5pm (slide talk)
Saturday, July 18 9am - 5pm (field trip)
Cost: $125
Limit: 18 participants
