Once again this summer we are delighted to have Elena Miranda & Josh Schwartz as our Geologists in Residence here at the studio. For the first of our two field tips we’ll hike Joseph’s Trail to explore an historic mica mine near Ojo Caliente in the Chama river valley, and to learn about geology in relation to ceramic materials. As you know, mica is a unique & traditional ingredient in some claybodies.
This trip involves a moderate hike of several miles. If time allows & we can get this arranged, we’ll also visit La Madera, a nearby village with its own important history of micaceous pottery making.
As before, we’ll enjoy refreshments & have a slide talk at 5pm on the Friday before the field trip. Elena & Josh will provide an overview of geology of our area, and make connections between geologic processes such as melting & cooling and our own versions of these processes as we use clay, make glazes, and fire pots in the studio.
This year we’ll travel together in vans rather than carpooling. Funds from the field trip registrations will be donated to the Earth & Fire Foundation, whose mission is to bridge geology and the ceramic arts through education, research, and community programs that promote sustainable use of earth materials.
Dates:
Friday June 26, 5pm (slide talk)
Saturday June 27, 9am - 4pm (field trip)
Cost: $125
Limit: 18 participants
