Making & Understanding Glazes
Note: as of December 11 we have full registration in this section.
Feel free to email me if you’d ike to be on the waitlist. Thanks - Theo
This 8-week class explores ceramic glazes both in practice, making test batches & analyzing results, and in theory - learning about the common minerals used in recipes, learning about glass formation & melting, fluxes, colorants.
A great class if you have some experience in the clay studio & have wondered what makes glazes work, may want to get your own kiln someday, or have surfed around on Glazy & DigitalFire looking at recipes & wanting to make that certain semi-opaque matte & just need to know how to get started.
This time around our classes will be 3 hours, since previous classes have often run short on time for discussion, demonstration, experimentation. Also this time, we’ll alternate ‘class days’ with ‘lab days’. So, presentation of new material & concepts will alternate weeks with 3-hour lab sessions, during which you can do assignments & create glaze tests with guidance from the teacher & your fellow classmates.
An interactive, slightly-demanding, revelatory class that may remind you of your high school chemistry (yes we’ll discuss the first two columns of the periodic table) and also may deepen your connection to the alchemical nature ceramics & to your own evolving work in the studio.
Note: we will not be covering techniques for glaze application, layering, resists, or other design concepts related to glazes.
Also note: by placing your order for this class, you're consenting to our Participation Guidelines & Liability Release form. Please take a moment to review this form before signing up. Thank you!
Teacher: Cameron
Time: Saturdays 10am - 1pm January 4 - February 22
Cost: $425 covers materials, 8 class meetings (4 class, 4 lab), access to the worktime calendar for independent work
Limit: 8 students
